Hi everyone – name is Neta, and welcome to my IS blog! With this project, I want to try and understand the nature of the intense ideological polarization we see today: is it a product of differences in real, authentic beliefs, or is it simply tribalism, where loyalty to a certain group clouds our judgement and our ability to communicate? In order to differentiate the two, I plan to distribute a survey with a “Veil of Ignorance” intervention. John Rawls’ thought experiment essentially takes away the tribalistic tendencies within people by asking them to design a society with no personal knowledge. You could be any race and religion, you could have any level of education, you could be anywhere on the economic spectrum… I am currently finalizing my survey, and plan to distribute it to the DA student body and faculty within the next few weeks! Stay tuned, because once it is distributed, I can speak a bit more candidly about the inner-workings of the study. I can’t wait!
